Nalco tourney promotes golf in Orissa

Bhubaneswar Golf Club hosted the 4th Nalco East Zone Golf Tournament at the BGC Course here at Infocity, Chandrasekharpur from February 22 to 22, 2007. The three-day tournament attracted as many as 80 golfers, including 10 ladies from within and outside the state.

Sukanta Sahoo of BGC won the trophy in the individual (0-18 handicap) category, while S P Patnaik finished runner-up with a score of 71. Augustin Ekka won the Best Golfer Salver Trophy by returning with a card of 81. BGC golf captain Bhumi Mohanty won the 19-24 handicap prize with a nett score of 69, while Srimoy Kar finished runner-up with a nett score of 71.

A K Padhy of Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited (MCL) was awarded the trophy as the best outstation golfer. He came out with a score of 72. Rehan Ali won the veteran title with a nett score of 34. He displayed his prowess in a nine-hole course, unlike the top-order golfers who went through with a full 18-hole course. Gopinath Sarangi finished runner-up behind Ali with a nett score of 37.

Rapidly improving Lakhi Swain claimed the Ladies title by logging a nine-hole nett score of 37. Her younger oppoent Alka Taneja finished runner-up in the event by returning with a nett score of 43. State Tourism and Excise Minister Devi Mishra graced the second-day function as chief guest and gave away the individual trophies. Sponsors Nalco Director (Project) P K Routray was present on the occasion as a guest.
